JOB SUMMARY: The Project Cost Accountant / Assistant Controller performs a wide variety of accounting tasks to support the Controller with the accurate and timely reporting of project costing and revenue recognition in a professional services environment. This is an experienced accounting position that works closely with the Controller to maintain business transactions of the organization, applying the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and ASC 606 that includes analytical work and thorough review of financial records. This position requires dedication to the overall company growth strategies to move the company fiscally forward with compliance and integrity. 


  • Collaborate with the professional services delivery team to accurately collect and process information for project costing and revenue recognition across a portfolio of Fixed Fee projects. 

  • Develop and maintain a detailed revenue recognition schedule per project. Calculate revenue to recognize along with necessary journal entries per project based on different revenue recognition methods. (Cost-to-Cost, Effort-Expended, etc.)  

  • Work closely with the Controller and senior leadership to develop business practices and processes regarding project costing and revenue recognition. 

  • Prepare monthly journal entries manually or by initiating electronic creation through software programs. 

  • Work with the project team to develop revenue & cost projections. 

  • Conduct monthly and quarterly revenue/cost review meetings with the professional services team. 

  • Produce and analyze reports on project financial status and key metrics and present the results to professional services team and senior leadership. 

  • Assure compliance with company internal Cost Management policies and procedures. 

  • Work closely with the Controller in preparing financial reports for internal purposes, the parent company and/or auditors. 

  • Active participation and functional leadership for new internal ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system evaluation (requirements definition, packaged software functionality review, transformation to new ERP, etc.). 

  • Assist the Controller with suggesting changes to policies or procedures to improve financial reporting methods or outcomes. 

  • Backup and dual control for journal entries and other misc. approvals. 

  • Ensure all project costs and billing entries are included and entered for external entities (subcontractors, etc.). 

  • Assist the Controller with accounts payable processing. 

  • Assist with month/quarter/year end tasks that include, but not limited to: 

  • Accruals 

  • Reconciliations 

  • Deferred revenue 

  • Reporting 

  • Financial statements 

  • Data analysis 

  • Adjusting journal entries 

  • Assist the Controller with audit requirements and documentation. 

  • Protect organization’s value by keeping information confidential. 

  • Perform special projects as assigned by the Controller. 

  • Perform other duties as assigned. 



  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration strongly preferred. 

  • 5+ years of applied experience in project cost accounting and finance. 

  • 2+ years of cost accounting experience with comprehensive understanding of cost accounting practices and procedures specifically relating to professional services organizations strongly preferred. 

  • Strong knowledge of MS Office suite and accounting software. 

  • Advanced/Super User level of expertise in MS Excel. 

  • Experience with implementing and/or using a cost accounting ERP solution is preferred. 

  • Thorough understanding of GAAP, ASC 606 revenue recognition, accounting, and finding/fixing discrepancies. 

  • A comprehensive understanding of journal entries. 

  • The ability to act responsibly and ethically when working with sensitive financial information, whether it is information for the company or for individuals. 

  • The willingness and ability to comply with local, state, and federal financial regulations, as well as the regulations established by the company itself. 

  • Experience with government contracting organizations, preferred. 

  • Valid driver’s license and insurance. 

  • Applicants subject to government security investigations and must meet eligibility requirements related to the clearance process. 

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:  The majority of work for this role is performed in a home office and/or professional office and interacts with a wide variety of people with differing functions, personalities, and abilities. Telecommuters are expected to have sufficient home office space that appears neat, organized, and professional when on video meetings.
