Location: Sebastian Farms/Okanagan Valley

Role Overview

Responsible to lead the team managing specific vineyard acreage in the Okanagan Valley, motivating your team to produce quality grapes. Key stakeholders are the Viticulture team, who the Manager works with closely to achieve quality and yield targets for vineyard blocks, and wine types. Demonstrate leadership, & best practices in staff training, motivation & OH&S program.

 

Responsibilities

• Plan, schedule, and manage safe and productive work activities in the vineyards.

• Working with the Viticulture Manager - Oliver, create vineyard budget and manage the vineyard costs to the budget plan.

• Implement programs to ensure grape quality, and yield objectives are met.

• Provide monthly variance reporting and explanation to Viticulture Manager, along with a plan to fix variances moving forward.

• Provide understanding and insight of efficiencies and cost saving opportunities and techniques to employees.

• Manage the frost control program to ensure minimal injury to Sebastian Farms vines.

• Recruit and train motivated farm labour.

• Ensuring all employees are trained, certified and supervised for all required training. Ensure documentation is signed off, documented and stored in the employee’s file.

• Lead and manage all employees successfully, dealing with any employee relations issues that arise (ie absenteeism, discipline, safety, unprofessional conduct), holding all employees accountable to Mag Code of Conduct and Standards.

• Responsible for the documentation of employee relations issues, conferring with Human Resources when necessary and utilize progressive discipline where required.

• Champion the Occupational Health and Safety Program for Sebastian Farms, overall responsibilities for safety of all employees and providing a safe and healthy workplace, according to all legislation in BC.

• Responsible to provide monthly Occupational Health and Safety Statistical reporting.

• Set the standards and evaluate employee’s performance against these standards, and conclude an annual performance rating for each employee in March.

• Create performance plans for employees to close gaps and increase effectiveness.

• Accurately complete administrative duties associated with new hire paperwork and forms.

• Responsible to complete bi-weekly payroll; completing and approving timesheets within set payroll timeframes and quality levels.

• Champion vineyard health & safety program including ensuring training and a safe working environment

• Representing management on the Health & Safety committee

• Problem solve and resolving any issues related to the health and safety of employees

• Operate machinery, and train others in safe equipment operation.

• Work alongside vineyard workers while doing such activities as planting, pruning, suckering, thinning, spraying, and picking.

• Collect weekly PAM data, input and reconcile weekly labour data information into system.

• Fully participate in the company’s GMP program.

Position Requirements

• 7+ years progressive vineyard experience.

• 5+ years experience leading and training vineyard teams.

• Education – Certificate/diploma in Viticulture or related sciences preferred.

• 5 Years experience leading a best practice OHS program and proven safety record.

• 5 years experience operating vineyard equipment including tractors, sprayers, ATV’s, RTV’s.

• Solid knowledge of all vineyard procedures and practices including planting, pruning, and picking, irrigation, IPM, and plant nutrition especially as they relate to continuously improving quality.

• Experience creating and managing a vineyard budget, showing understanding of the financial and business aspects of large scale viticulture.

• Intermediate Computer skills; MS Office, Suite, Word, Excel.

• Solid verbal and written English communication skills (Second language an asset).

• Valid BC Driver’s License.

• Valid Pesticide Applicators License.

• Valid First Aid Level 1.

• Excellent organizational skills.

• Ability to adapt to change quickly and effectively.

 

Working Conditions

• Some office work required.

• Outdoors in inclement weather.

• Physically demanding including lifting up to 60 lbs, pushing, pulling, twisting and turning repetitively.

• Overtime, evening, overnight, and weekend work required seasonally.
